Introduction to a Believer’s Authority

Lesson Outline for June 19, 2025

The war is not God against Satan; The war is Satan against mankind!

Authorities

  • What is a power of attorney
  • How and what type of authority do troops get when going to war
  • Who does an ambassador speak for, and what authority do they possess
  • Policeman authority

Hebrew and Greek Terms / Definitions

  • Authority #G1849 “exousia” – the power and strength from which one is given and exercises
  • Name #G3686 “onoma” – authority, authority of, power of – authority Matt18:5, 20; 24:5; 28:19

Man’s Authority – All humans

  • Over God’s creation – earth, animals, to build, etc.
  • Exercise free-will
  • Secular – Rom 13:1 Psa 2 Policeman, Mayor, Governor, President, etc
  • Spiritual authority to act – Parent/child; teacher/student, husband/wife, pastor/church; also, governing leaders over their sphere of authority

Psa 8:5-8 ESV – “5 Yet you have made him a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned him with glory and honor. 6 You have given him dominion over the works of your hands; you have put all things under his feet, 7 all sheep and oxen, and also the beasts of the field, 8 the birds of the heavens, and the fish of the sea, whatever passes along the paths of the seas.”

Jesus’ Authority

Where did Jesus’ authority come from? Who did Jesus commit His spirit to Luke 23:46?

Matt 7:28-29 ESV – “28 And when Jesus finished these sayings, the crowds were astonished at his teaching, 29 for he was teaching them as one who had authority, and not as their scribes.”

Jesus did not teach by what He learned from the Jewish leaders/teachers

Matt 28:18-20 ESV – “18 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age (#G165 “aion” end of this world, perpetuity, end of time).

From the Father, to the Son, Jesus Christ, to Christian believers

Believer’s Authority

  • How do we get it? Salvation / Born-again
  • What’s it for? What is a soldier’s training, weapons, equipment, authority for?

2 Cor 5:20 ESV – 20 Therefore, we are ambassadors (#G4243 “presbeuo” elder, ambassador) for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. (Eph 6:20).

  • Represent God on earth. Just like an ambassador, or a soldier, or getting “commander’s authority as a leader”
  • We are to represent Jesus and His Kingdom
  • Accomplish our purposes, assignments and missions. This is best accomplished by being a disciple.

John 8:31-32  – “31 So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, 32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

  • When we “abide” we move from the parade field to the battlefield.
  • Our enemy is not concerned about the parade field

John 14:12-14, 21 – 12 “Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father. 13 Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it. … 21 Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me. And he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him.

Mar 16:15-20 – “15 And he said to them, “Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation. 16 Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. 17 And these signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will cast out demons; they will speak in new tongues; 18 they will pick up serpents with their hands; and if they drink any deadly poison, it will not hurt them; they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will recover.” 19 So then the Lord Jesus, after he had spoken to them, was taken up into heaven and sat down at the right hand of God. 20 And they went out and preached everywhere, while the Lord worked with them and confirmed the message by accompanying signs.”

PHD – Preach, Heal and Deliver

Luke 9:1-2 ESV – 1 And he called the twelve together and gave them power and authority over all demons and to cure diseases, 2 and he sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal.

Luke 10:19-20  – “19 Behold, I have given you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall hurt you. 20 Nevertheless, do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.”

Authority to:

  • To speak in the name/authority of Jesus Christ
  • Preach the gospel
  • Issue Christian blessing
  • Heal
  • Gifts of the Holy Spirit
  • Authority over demons
  • Turn a curse into a blessing
  • To bind and loose
  • Approach the God’s Throne
  • Plead and Apply the Blood of Jesus Christ

Not an all inclusive list

Non-believers don’t have the authority

Act 19:13-15 – “13 Then some of the itinerant Jewish exorcists undertook to invoke the name of the Lord Jesus over those who had evil spirits, saying, “I adjure you by the Jesus whom Paul proclaims.” 14 Seven sons of a Jewish high priest named Sceva were doing this. 15 But the evil spirit answered them, “Jesus I know, and Paul I recognize, but who are you?”

  • These Jewish priests were not believers in Jesus Christ as their Savior and the demons knew it

Note – You may have heard someone teach that demons can’t say the name Jesus Christ. This is not true! We see it here in Acts 19.

Final thoughts

  • Men walk in the authority Jesus has given to you as believers
  • No one has more spiritual authority over you, than you (accepted God)
  • No one has more spiritual authority over your home and family than you
  • The release of Jesus’ authority is directly tied to God’s will for you and others
  • Jesus’ authority overcomes the enemy
  • Some battles take longer to fight, just like the natural realm – don’t stop praying and pressing into the Lord
