Lesson Outline for Sept 25, 2025

Gifts From Holy Spirit

Goal – To introduce the gifts from Holy Spirit

Note – The Father, Son and Holy Spirit provided gifts to us. These gifts are documented in the New Testament. This lesson is meant to discuss the gifts from Holy Spirit – the Spirit of Jesus Christ, and finishes our introduction of gifts from Father, Son and Holy Spirit. NOTE – numerous books have been written on spiritual gifts, including gifts from Holy Spirit. This is an introduction for Advance Men on gifts of Holy Spirit.

After receiving this lesson, release yourself from a religious mindset, intellect and pride; go back and study the verses and pray for God to reveal to you the truth – see how He answers you!

  • Holy Spirit is a “He” (this is not a question – it’s a factual statement from God’s word
  • Why has God given us gifts from Holy Spirit?
  • What are your thoughts on gifts from Holy Spirit?
  • Do you know your gifts? See Enclosure 1 below for a full list of spiritual gifts and a link to a spiritual gifts test

We are a vessel

What are you putting in your vessel

Heb 5:1-2 ESV – “1 For every high priest chosen from among men is appointed to act on behalf of men in relation to God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. 2 He can deal gently with the ignorant and wayward, since he himself is beset with weakness.”

2 Cor 4:7, 13, 16 ESV – “7 But we have this treasure in jars of clay, to show that the surpassing power belongs to Godand not to us. … 13 Since we have the same spirit of faith according to what has been written, “I believed, and so I spoke,” we also believe, and so we also speak, … 16 So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day.”

John 16:13-15 ESV – “13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare (anangello) to you the things that are to come. 14 He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. 15 All that the Father has is mine; therefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.

  • Jesus Christ is our High Priest – He is our Sacrifice and He provided gifts to His church Eph 4:11-13
  • Jesus Christ sent His Spirit to advance His Kingdom; His Spirit speaks on Jesus’ authority
  • The “treasure” is in us to proclaim the gospel and demonstrate the power of God – to draw people to our Heavenly Father, through His Son, Jesus Christ
  • How are like “jars of clay” and what goes in a vessel?
  • What is man made of in Genesis 1? Earth, dirt, clay

Gifts from Holy Spirit

Given to each as God wills

1 Cor 12:1-11 ESV – “1 Now concerning spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be uninformed. 2 You know that when you were pagans you were led astray to mute idols, however you were led. 3 Therefore I want you to understand that no one speaking in the Spirit of God ever says “Jesus is accursed!” and no one can say “Jesus is Lord” except in the Holy Spirit. 4 Now there are varieties of gifts (charisma), but the same Spirit; 5 and there are varieties of service (diakonia/ministry), but the same Lord; 6 and there are varieties of activities (energema), but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone. 7 To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good (for us to profit spiritually). 8 For to one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts (charisma) of healing by the one Spirit, 10 to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the ability to distinguish between spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. 11 All these are empowered by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually as he wills.”

John 7:38-39 ESV – “38 Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.‘” 39 Now this he said about the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were to receive, for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.

  • Gift manifests a “supernatural” God result to advance His Kingdom
  • These gifts produce Holy Spirit fruit / results – including miracles aka “mighty works”
  • Love and faith are required
  • Apportioned as God’s determines
  • Can be developed and sharpened; for the common good/profit of believers and advancing God’s Kingdom on earth, as it is in heaven

Last thoughts and considerations

  • Agreement and unity by believers on God’s gifts to us would be wonderful, but the church is not in unity of this topic
  • Thus, I offer Holy Spirit gifting is not a 1st order doctrine – 1st order doctrine would be salvation comes in believing in Jesus Christ as our Savior alone
  • The gifts are to:
    • Glorify God and build / edify His church – Body of Christ
    • Advance God’s Kingdom on earth as it is in heaven
    • For us to walk out God’s purpose and assignment on our life
    • To lead and empower us to walk in truth
  • We are responsible for quenching Holy Spirit – You do the research and prayer – ask the Lord to reveal His word to you
  • Joel 2:28-29 is a prophecy given for the “Day of the Lord” and it applies today too
  • The same need for the “non-confrontational” gifts such as: service, leadership, admin, faith, intercession, giving, etc – apply to the gifts God has given us such as prophecy, healing, miracles, tongues words of knowledge and wisdom, etc
  • There is no place in God’s word where some gifts were taken away, nullified or obviated
  • We have the authority of Christ, but not the same anointing; don’t confuse the two

Additional verses for self-study

Joel 2:28-29 ESV – 28 “And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, and your young men shall see visions. 29 Even on the male and female servants in those days I will pour out my Spirit.”

1 Cor 12:1-11 NIV – “1 Now about the gifts of the Spirit, brothers and sisters, I do not want you to be uninformed. 2 You know that when you were pagans, somehow or other you were influenced and led astray to mute idols. 3 Therefore I want you to know that no one who is speaking by the Spirit of God says, “Jesus be cursed,” and no one can say, “Jesus is Lord,” except by the Holy Spirit. 4 There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. 5 There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. 6 There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work. 7 Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. 8 To one there is given through the Spirit a message of wisdom, to another a message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, 10 to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues. 11 All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines.” (NIV version to compare)

John 14:16-18 ESV – “16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, 17 even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you. 18 “I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.’ ”

  • Something to consider – why did Jesus use the term “orphan” along with the word “world”? Consider the one who rules the world is Satan – when we followed the ways of the world Satan was our wicked stepfather or foster father. Now as believers Jesus Christ sent His Spirit to parent through Jesus to Father God.

John 15:26 ESV – “26 ‘But when the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will bear witness about me.’ ”

1 Cor 13:1-3 ESV – “1 If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. 2 And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. 3 If I give away all I have, and if I deliver up my body to be burned, but have not love, I gain nothing.” (We can’t love like this without Holy Spirit – this is unconditional & sacrificial love)

Rom 8:26-27 ESV – “26 Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. 27 And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.”

Jude 1:18-21 ESV – “18 They said to you, “In the last time there will be scoffers, following their own ungodly passions.” 19 It is these who cause divisions, worldly people, devoid of the Spirit. 20 But you, beloved, building yourselves up in your most holy faith and praying in the Holy Spirit, 21 keep yourselves in the love of God, waiting for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ that leads to eternal life.”

  • Speaking in tongues is a prayer language (Romans and Jude above)
  • At times when a believer is praying in tongues at an assembling of believers – another may interpret the tongue

Act 1:5-8 ESV – “5 for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.” 6 So when they had come together, they asked him, “Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?” 7 He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons that the Father has fixed by his own authority. 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.

  • These same disciples had already received a portion of Holy Spirit as Jesus Himself breathed it on them when He sent them out.
  • But more was to come. They 120 of disciples were obedient and went and waited for His Spirit to come – Day of Pentecost

Luke 11:13 ESV – “If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”

Matt 3:11 ESV – “I baptize you with water for repentance, but he who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.” (Jesus Christ baptizes with Holy Spirit)

1 Thess 5:19-23 ESV – “19 Do not quench the Spirit. 20 Do not despise prophecies, 21 but test everything; hold fast what is good. 22 Abstain from every form of evil. 23 Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

  • Holy Spirit can be quenched
  • We are giving Holy Spirit to test everything
  • When we quench Holy Spirit we open ourselves up to spiritual attacks and deception from the enemy

Phil 1:19 ESV – “19 for I know that through your prayers and the help of the Spirit of Jesus Christ this will turn out for my deliverance..,” (Holy Spirit is the Spirit Christ)

Acts 16:6-7 ESV – “6 And they went through the region of Phrygia and Galatia, having been forbidden by the Holy Spirit to speak the word in Asia. 7 And when they had come up to Mysia, they attempted to go into Bithynia, but the Spirit of Jesus did not allow them.” (Holy Spirit is the Spirit Christ)

Gal 4:6 ESV – “And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!“” (Jesus Christ’s Spirit connects us to Father Abba God.No one comes to the Father except through Me” John 14:6)
