God is not surprised, He is merciful
Don’t mistake God’s mercy for weakness – mocking God has consequences
Psa 2:2-4 ESV – “2 The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD and against his Anointed, saying, 3 “Let us burst their bonds apart and cast away their cords from us.” 4 He who sits in the heavens laughs; the Lord holds them in derision (mocks).”
Prov 6:16-19 ESV – “16 There are six things that the LORD hates, seven that are an abomination to him: 17 haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, 18 a heart that devises wicked plans, feet that make haste to run to evil, 19 a false witness who breathes out lies, and one who sows discord among brothers.”
Rom 1:18-32 ESV – 18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. 19 For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. 20 For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. 21 For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Claiming to be wise, they became fools, 23 and exchanged the glory (majesty) of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things. 24 Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves, 25 because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen. 26 For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions (a feeling the mind suffers, depraved, vile passions). For their women exchanged natural relations for those that are contrary to nature; 27 and the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another, men committing shameless acts with men and receiving in themselves the due penalty (necessity of law, bad reward/recompense — curse). for their error. 28 And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a debased mind (depraved/unprincipled soul) to do what ought not to be done. 29 They were filled with all manner of unrighteousness, evil, covetousness, malice. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, maliciousness. They are gossips, 30 slanderers, haters of God, insolent, haughty, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, 31 foolish, faithless, heartless, ruthless. 32 Though they know God’s righteous decree that those who practice such things deserve to die, they not only do them but give approval to those who practice them.”
- Prov 16 is clear on 7 things God hates, considers an abomination
- We see all forms of evil in Rom 1 above, especially sexual immorality and idol worship; Is this happening in our nation today?
- Immediately under active curses – v. 27
- Depravity brings produces a “debased mind” – mental illness, heaviness, depression v 28-29 is rampant in our nation – “the most developed / advanced, wise nation in the world”
- When a government approves and promotes depravity it effects (infects) a nation
- God still judges nations. He has judged our nation in the past – He was merciful and patient – hoping we would repent, but we feared man, not God – US Civil War cost our nation approximately – 700k lives (read President Lincoln’s 2nd Inaugural Address – https://www.nps.gov/linc/learn/historyculture/lincoln-second-inaugural.htm
- We’re financially bankrupt – “fools” with our national purse – as of writing this +$38 trillion in debt
- Are we morally bankrupt yet?
But, God
We see across the scriptures – But, God…,
2 Chron 7:12-14 ESV – “12 Then the LORD appeared to Solomon in the night and said to him: “I have heard your prayer and have chosen this place for myself as a house of sacrifice. 13 When I shut up the heavens so that there is no rain, or command the locust to devour the land, or send pestilence among my people, 14 if my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.”
Isa 33:22 ESV – “For the LORD is our judge; the LORD is our lawgiver; the LORD is our king; he will save us.”
Jon 3:6-10 ESV – “6 The word reached the king of Nineveh, and he arose from his throne, removed his robe, covered himself with sackcloth, and sat in ashes. 7 And he issued a proclamation and published through Nineveh, “By the decree of the king and his nobles: Let neither man nor beast, herd nor flock, taste anything. Let them not feed or drink water, 8 but let man and beast be covered with sackcloth, and let them call out mightily to God. Let everyone turn from his evil way and from the violence that is in his hands. 9 Who knows? God may turn and relent and turn from his fierce anger, so that we may not perish.” 10 When God saw what they did, how they turned from their evil way, God relented of the disaster that he had said he would do to them, and he did not do it.”
Psa 33:12 ESV – “Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD, the people whom he has chosen as his heritage!”
- God is our JUDGE, LAWGIVER and KING – He will save us
- How is our nation saved and blessed? – Forgiveness, Repentance, Declare Jesus as Savior; God is the One who grants repentance – declare and serve God
- God is looking for people to follow Him, not perfect people. And, not the God we invent to fit our lifestyle and philosophy.
- You and I are His people, stand in the gap for our nation, repent for our nation, seek God’s face (presence); And, He wants to use YOU and I to turn this nation back to Him and change the “mind” of our nation back to Him
- Our God who stayed His hand on one of the most vile and depraved kingdom’s on earth at the time, Ninevah – can do the same for our nation – we don’t want another judgement like the US Civil War
- The same – “But, God…,” – used for Noah, Abraham, Joseph, Moses, Joshua, Elijah, Elisha, Daniel, and Paul and John the apostles…, Is the same “But, God…, “ for you and I
- Let’s not put our lamp under a bowl; put your lamp on a hill and shine bright
- We each have a role, assignment and action to conduct – Don’t settle for the world, don’t let our nation settle for the world – check out Matt 16:26, Mark 8:36, Luke 9:25
- Pray – Intercede for your family, town/city, state and nation – get other men together and pray around government buildings, pray at city council meetings, pray daily
Intercessory Prayer – Jesus, we come to You, our Intercessor, acknowledging the sin of our nation. Thank You for staying Your merciful hand and forgive each of us for partnering with this evil. I/We need Your forgiveness, our nation needs Your forgiveness. LORD, as we come to You on behalf of our nation, we seek Your Presence before we can ask for Your hand. We repent and ask You to release Your Spirit afresh over us and our nation, bring salvation to the lost. Holy Spirit give us the words to pray and strengthen us to not grow weary in contending for our nation and those in leadership. Give Your divine strategy and wisdom to those leading our nation, states, counties and towns. We pray the people of this land will seek first Your kingdom and righteousness. Guide our nation the way back to You. We ask You to release powerful angels to bind the regional principalities and authorities over our nation – break open the lies and confuse the demonic forces. Reveal and judge the corruption. Show us the way out of financial ruin. Strengthen Your church to fear You before man, and to rise in prayer; shift us back to You, Your ways, Your truth and Your moral laws. We thank you and honor and glorify Your name – The name above every other name, Jesus Christ of Nazareth.
Last thoughts and considerations
- Prayer works – Persist in prayer
- The Pharisees thought they were free and could not see their captivity to Rome or evil spiritual forces
- God is merciful. He has done it before, He will do it again
- Satan wants to take our nation down. The US sends out more Christian missionaries than any other country in the world still
- Pray for our leaders to remove pride and turn to God
- Pray for God to give our leaders strategy and protection when administering God’s strategy; and, to reveal those moving against God’s strategy – to reveal plans made “in the dark”
- Ask for righteous wisdom and discernment – listen to Holy Spirit
- Joseph and Daniel contended in dark places and held great influence via obedience / fear of the Lord, no compromise, persistence, and prayer
Additional verses for self-study
Prov 28:2 ESV – “When a land transgresses, it has many rulers, but with a man of understanding and knowledge, its stability will long continue.”
Prov 29:2 ESV – “When the righteous increase, the people rejoice, but when the wicked rule, the people groan.”
Pro 3:7 ESV – “Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD, and turn away from evil.”
Rev 2:20 ESV – “But I have this against you, that you tolerate that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess and is teaching and seducing my servants to practice sexual immorality and to eat food sacrificed to idols.”
Matt 16:18 ESV – “And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.”
Jesus Christ is the Rock the church (ekklesia) is built on – we are His government on earth.
Psa 119:33-37 ESV – “33 Teach me, O LORD, the way of your statutes; and I will keep it to the end. 34 Give me understanding, that I may keep your law and observe it with my whole heart. 35 Lead me in the path of your commandments, for I delight in it. 36 Incline my heart to your testimonies, and not to selfish gain! 37 Turn my eyesfrom looking at worthless things; and give me life in your ways.”
2 Tim 3:1-9 ESV – 1 But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty. 2 For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3 heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good, 4 treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, 5 having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. Avoid such people. 6 For among them are those who creep into households and capture weak women, burdened with sins and led astray by various passions, 7 always learning and never able to arrive at a knowledge of the truth. 8 Just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so these men also oppose the truth, men corrupted in mind and disqualified regarding the faith. 9 But they will not get very far, for their folly will be plain to all, as was that of those two men.
2 Tim 4:1-5 ESV – “1 I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingdom: 2 preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching. 3 For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, 4 and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths. 5 But as for you, always be sober-minded, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.”
Men, be sober minded, persist, endure and fulfill the ministry God has assigned you
Hos 4:1-13 ESV – “1 Hear the word of the LORD, O children of Israel, for the LORD has a controversy with the inhabitants of the land. There is no faithfulness or steadfast love, and no knowledge of God in the land; 2 there is swearing, lying, murder, stealing, and committing adultery; they break all bounds, and bloodshed follows bloodshed. 3 Therefore the land mourns, and all who dwell in it languish, and also the beasts of the field and the birds of the heavens, and even the fish of the sea are taken away. 4 Yet let no one contend, and let none accuse, for with you is my contention, O priest. 5 You shall stumble by day; the prophet also shall stumble with you by night; and I will destroy your mother. 6 My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge; because you have rejected knowledge, I reject you from being a priest to me. And since you have forgotten the law of your God, I also will forget your children. 7 The more they increased, the more they sinned against me; I will change their glory into shame. 8 They feed on the sin of my people; they are greedy for their iniquity. 9 And it shall be like people, like priest; I will punish them for their ways and repay them for their deeds. 10 They shall eat, but not be satisfied; they shall play the whore, but not multiply, because they have forsaken the LORD to cherish 11 whoredom, wine, and new wine, which take away the understanding. 12 My people inquire of a piece of wood, and their walking staff gives them oracles. For a spirit of whoredom has led them astray, and they have left their God to play the whore. 13 They sacrifice on the tops of the mountains and burn offerings on the hills, under oak, poplar, and terebinth, because their shade is good. Therefore your daughters play the whore, and your brides commit adultery.”
What is the idol on Wall Street – A bronze bull – mammon
This does not have to be our nation
Psa 119:160 ESV – “The sum of your word is truth, and every one of your righteous rules endures forever.”
Ex 18:18-27 – Look at these verses to how Moses set up God’s government
Deut 1:9-18 – ibid
1 Sam 8:7, 10-19 ESV – “7 And the LORD said to Samuel, “Obey the voice of the people in all that they say to you, for they have not rejected you, but they have rejected me from being king over them. … 10 So Samuel told all the words of the LORD to the people who were asking for a king from him. 11 He said, “These will be the ways of the king who will reign over you: he will take your sons and appoint them to his chariots and to be his horsemen and to run before his chariots. 12 And he will appoint for himself commanders of thousands and commanders of fifties, and some to plow his ground and to reap his harvest, and to make his implements of war and the equipment of his chariots. 13 He will take your daughters to be perfumers and cooks and bakers. 14 He will take the best of your fields and vineyards and olive orchards and give them to his servants. 15 He will take the tenth of your grain and of your vineyards and give it to his officers and to his servants. 16 He will take your male servants and female servants and the best of your young men and your donkeys, and put them to his work. 17 He will take the tenth of your flocks, and you shall be his slaves. 18 And in that day you will cry out because of your king, whom you have chosen for yourselves, but the LORD will not answer you in that day.” 19 But the people refused to obey the voice of Samuel. And they said, “No! But there shall be a king over us…,”
God warned the Israelites what earthly rulers will do when they rejected God’s leadership
Don’t give up – Giving up in battle produces casualties and defeat – we are more than conquerors in Jesus Christ
