Strong’s Hebrew and Greek Terms / Definitions
- divination #H7080 / #H7081 “qesem / qasam” witchcraft, soothsayer (one who uses magic and witchcraft to prophesy); #G4436 “python/puthon” name of Pythian serpent or dragon, dwelling in Pytho, at the foot of mount Parnassus, guarding the oracle of Delphi, and slain by Apollo.[1]

Witchcraft can be on a continuum and “blur” between informal and formal

Witchcraft
1 Sam 15:23 ESV – “For rebellion is as the sin of divination, and presumption is as iniquity and idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of the LORD, he has also rejected you from being king.”
Witchcraft is a common Satanic system and is expressed in many ways. One can participate in witchcraft knowingly or unknowingly – a believer’s ignorance or “unbelief” is leverage for Satan over God’s children.
There is no “good” (white) witchcraft or magic – All forms of witchcraft are evil in God’s eyes.
Witchcraft can be formal or informal. One can participate in informal witchcraft with a formal practitioner.
Witchcraft is accessing secret or hidden knowledge outside of God’s revelation and is done by demonic forces via familiar spirits. The unclean spirit/demon is “familiar” to the one using the spirit, the spirit brings the power operating in the person – seances, fortune-telling, tarot cards, spells, etc. There is no place in God’s word noting a stop of these practices.
AFM Witchcraft Definition – “Witchcraft is the invoking of the power of demons by making sacrifices to them. The sacrifice made to demons can be in the form of time, talent, treasure, allegiance, or even worship. The sacrifice to demons can be made either knowingly or unknowingly. Witchcraft is the calling on of demons to aid men. Witchcraft is harnessing the power of demons for selfish and sinful purposes.”[2]
Webster’s Definition – the use of sorcery or magic; communication with the devil or with a familiar spirit; an irresistible influence or fascination; rituals and practices that incorporate belief in magic and that are associated especially with neo-pagan traditions and religions (such as Wicca).[3]
AFM Satanism Definition – Satanism is the exaltation of, and perhaps the worship of, Satan, the devil, Lucifer, or some other demon spirit or spirits.[4]
Dictionary.com – Any of a highly diverse group of religious, philosophical, or countercultural practices centered around Satan, either as a deity or a nontheistic symbol of enlightenment, individualism, or ethical egoism. A deliberate inversion of Christian rites in which Satan is worshiped. Also, satanism diabolical or satanic disposition, behavior, or activity.[5]
Both non-theistic and theistic Satanists and Wiccans celebrate several festivals a year associated with seasons. Halloween is one of the festivals both celebrate.
Informal
There are many different forms of informal witchcraft, and most people have participated in informal witchcraft unwittingly. Below are a few examples:
Ouija board, fortune teller, tarot cards, palm reader, horoscope and astrology, water witching, New Age healing practices, crystals, prediction of birth sex, ESP, hypnosis, necromancy (praying to the dead), amulets and wearing things for “protection”, dream catchers, etc

Formal
There are many different forms of formal witchcraft; WC is used for immediate results.
Below are a few examples:
- Wicca, Voo-doo (Haitian & LA), Hoo-doo and Root (North American), Macumba & Umbanda (Brazilian) Santeria (African/Cuban), Santa Muerte (Mexican), Yoruba (Nigerian), Obeah (Jamacian), Satanism, Luciferianism, New Age, Reiki, Native American / Alaskan spirituality, Hindu, Muslim Sufi and other occult practices, etc.
There are five (5) basic WC areas used to achieve sinful purposes:
- Launching spiritual attacks
- Performing supernatural signs
- Divination
- Mediumship
- Personal benefit and gain
Launching spiritual attacks
Point of contact (POC) clothing, hair, body fluid, picture, etc is used to establish an ungodly soul tie. Fornication is a common mechanism too. Landed curse is required. The UST is established.
If one has unrepented / undealt with sin, especially a sin of WC a POC curse can land.
Examples:
- Sending curses, casting spells, and using Voodoo dolls send demons to attack
- Witches curse objects and food and use them by selling, giving, having them placed into a location (house, office, property, car, etc)
- Astral projection / soul travel / remote viewing via a witch’s soul deposit (SD) into the mind of a person – usually to monitor. A demonic spirit is the vehicle for the SD.
Perform supernatural signs
Exo 8:6-7 ESV – “6 So Aaron stretched out his hand over the waters of Egypt, and the frogs came up and covered the land of Egypt. 7 But the magicians did the same by their secret arts and made frogs come up on the land of Egypt.”
2 Thess 2:7-9 ESV – “7 For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work. Only he who now restrains it will do so until he is out of the way. 8 And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord Jesus will kill with the breath of his mouth and bring to nothing by the appearance of his coming. 9 The coming of the lawless one is by the activity of Satan with all power and false signs and wonders,”
Witchcraft to divine
To prophesy is to speak under the influence of a spirit. God’s servants’ prophesy by Holy Spirit power.
Divination is prophesying through the power of demonic spirits.
Act 16:16 ESV – “As we were going to the place of prayer, we were met by a slave girl who had a spirit of divinationand brought her owners much gain by fortune-telling.”
Examples:
- Fortune telling, reading of palms, faces, shells, tea leaves, bones, etc., astrology, numerology, interpreting omens, seances, tarot and angel cards, dowsing rods / water witching, psychic work, etc.
Witchcraft to practice mediumship
There are no ghosts!
1 Sam 28:7 NIV – “Saul then said to his attendants, “Find me a woman who is a medium, so I may go and inquire of her.” “There is one in Endor,” they said.”
Ecc 12:7 ESV – “and the dust returns to the earth as it was, and the spirit returns to God who gave it.”
2 Cor 5:6-8 ESV – “6 So we are always of good courage. We know that while we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord, 7 for we walk by faith, not by sight. 8 Yes, we are of good courage, and we would rather be away from the body and at home with the Lord.”
Phil 1:23 ESV – “I am hard pressed between the two. My desire is to depart and be with Christ, for that is far better.”
Matt 25:46 ESV – “And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.“
John 19:30 ESV – “When Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished,” and He bowed his head and gave up His spirit.”

Mediumship examples: Channeling – allowing a demon to manifest through a medium’s body (Movie – Ghost); Seances comms with demon spirits – not dead people; Spiritism (from Hinduism) includes karma and reincarnation; Ouija boards, Magic 8-Balls, Bloody Mary etc.,
Witchcraft for personal benefit / gain
1) protection from evil; 2) Acquire wealth; 3) Assist with romance; 4) Healing; 5) Good luck/fortune; Personal spiritual benefits – practice of other religions
- Only God protects us from evil
- Use witchcraft for financial gain may achieve short-term gain; but, a poverty curse lands and a person is cursed with lack, poverty and destruction of resources.
- Healing uses the power of demons – “witchcraft wellness” formal WC – Native American, Santeria, visiting a shaman / aboriginal healer, crystals, New Age, yoga, acupuncture, hypnosis, psychic surgery, energy and chakra, reiki – Japanese energy healing, any pagan bathing and cleansing ritual, etc
Jezebelic Manipulations – manipulation, domination and intimidation
Witchcraft can be identified by – manipulation, domination, intimidation – ungodly control
Rev 2:19-22 ESV – “19 I know your works, your love and faith and service and patient endurance, and that your latter works exceed the first. 20 But I have this against you, that you tolerate that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess and is teaching and seducing my servants to practice sexual immorality and to eat food sacrificed to idols. 21 I gave her time to repent, but she refuses to repent of her sexual immorality. 22 Behold, I will throw her onto a sickbed, and those who commit adultery with her I will throw into great tribulation, unless they repent of her works,”
- Parents – control with fear, bribery, guilt, abuse
- Spouses – threaten divorce, overspend money, abuse power, withhold love, gas light, passive/aggressive,
- Women / Men – seduction, flattery, manipulate with sex, fear, deception,
- Politics/Media/Govt – lie to get votes, manipulate information, use fear on governed, etc,
- Church leaders – abuse, manipulate, mind control, preach false gospel
God hates witchcraft
- Exo 22:18 ESV – “You shall not permit a sorceress to live.”
Witches can affect Christians
- Gal 3:1 ESV – “O foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you? It was before your eyes that Jesus Christ was publicly portrayed as crucified.”
Witchcraft is using familiar spirits
- Act 16:16 ESV – “As we were going to the place of prayer, we were met by a slave girl who had a spirit of divination and brought her owners much gain by fortune-telling.”
Breaking the Curse of Witchcraft Prayer
Lord Jesus Christ, I confess I am a sinner and need your forgiveness. Thank you for dying on the cross for me. I put my trust in You alone for my salvation. I repent of my sins and ask that You grant me repentance. Your precious blood covers my sin. I claim the freedom You promised from sin and torment.
Holy Spirit reveal to me any spiritual root of witchcraft, in ignorance or done deliberately. Bring to my mind any infirmity or pain associated with these curses, so I may come out of agreement with them.
In the name of Jesus Christ, I confess my rebellion against you God. I repent and renounce my rebellion and disobedience and rejection of Your truth and agreeing with Satan, demonic forces and false religious practices knowingly and unknowingly.
I repent, renounce and break all curses of witchcraft on me and future generations all the way back in my bloodline. My renunciation includes, but is not limited to:
All evil curses, fetishes, charms, spells, evil enchantments, sorcery, Jezebel and witchcraft and any spirits connected with any person from occult practices. All witchcraft, divination and occult practices including – Voodoo, Hoodoo, Satanism, Native American spirits and spirit guides, shamanism, Santa Muerte, Santeria, Islam, Mormonism, Scientology, Buddhism, Hinduism, Wicca, and worship of mother earth, earth goddess, spiritism, all magic, paganism, paranormal, psychic third eye and psychic healing, secret societies, freemasonry, secret oaths, covenants with false gods, tarot cards, necromancy, paranormal and ghost hunting, Reiki, chakras, channeling, charming, seances, Ouija boards, palm reading, astrology, and influence of personal birth-sign, horoscope, fortune telling, false dreams, reading of tea leaves, coffee grounds or bones; bloody Mary summons, channeling, pagan festivals, water-witching, superstitions, demonic role-play games and false worship.
I cut all soul ties with those living and dead who cursed me with and through witchcraft, and with those I have done witchcraft with or to, knowingly or unknowingly. I cut off all access to me and my future generations by demonic spirits done through witchcraft by my ancestors, myself and anyone I have been in ungodly relationships with.
God, I ask you to remove any pain or sickness of _______________ associated with this sin. I exercise the authority given to me by You Lord and cast it out now in the name of Jesus Christ.

Gal 5:19-20 ESV – “19 Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, 20 idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions,”
2 Kings 9:30 ESV – “When Jehu came to Jezreel, Jezebel heard of it. And she painted her eyes and adorned her head and looked out of the window.”

[1] Thence the name was transferred to Apollo himself. Later the word was applied to diviners or soothsayers, regarded as inspired by Apollo. Since demons are the agents inspiring idolatry, 1 Cor 10:20 the young woman in Acts 16:16 was possessed by a demon instigating the cult of Apollo and thus had “a spirit of divination.”
