Goal – Understand “Accepting the invitation requires wearing God’s garments”
- What type of personal invite rejection would cause you the most emotional pain, and would you be angry?
- If God gave you heavenly garments and heavenly armor how often would you wear them?
- What does casual Christianity look like to you?
- What things are you not casual about?
Hebrew and Greek Terms / Definitions
- Invite #G2564 “kaleo” to call out load, to call by name
- Paid no attention #G272 “ameleo” to have no regard, neglect make light of
- Put on #G1746 “endyo” to be clothed in, to sink into (clothing), clothe oneself

Introduction – to Jewish society relative to weddings during this time. 1) Generally contract weddings drafted by parents (mostly fathers). 2) At betrothal they normally met, then separated until wedding – bride to her parents, groom to his parents where he prepared a home (common for 1 yr betrothal). 3) Once home was done, groom returned for his bride – sometimes with little notice. 4) A wedding ceremony occurred with a banquet to follow lasting 7 days – the entire community.
Is it the event, or the rejection of His Son?
Forgive me Lord Jesus for any mockery, rudeness and rejection of Your goodness
Matt 22:1-8 ESV – “1 And again Jesus spoke to them in parables, saying, 2 “The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who gave a wedding feast for his son, 3 and sent his servants to call those who were invited to the wedding feast, but they would not come. 4 Again he sent other servants, saying, ‘Tell those who are invited, “See, I have prepared my dinner, my oxen and my fat calves have been slaughtered, and everything is ready. Come to the wedding feast.”‘ 5 But they paid no attention and went off, one to his farm, another to his business, 6 while the rest seized his servants, treated them shamefully, and killed them. 7 The king was angry, and he sent his troops and destroyed those murderers and burned their city. 8 Then he said to his servants, ‘The wedding feast is ready, but those invited were not worthy.’”
- Who is Jesus addressing when He is speaking? He was extending mercy to Israel leaders
- How did the King’s servants invite the people? (think “keleo”) – Aloud and by name
- Who are the servants Jesus’ is referring to above?
- V3 – the notice was previously sent. The King alerts them now is the time – NO LOGICAL reason to refuse the royal invitation
- They rejected the king’s messengers, and chose what instead?
- disregard, self / idolatry, seizing & mistreatment, shaming, violence and murder
- Share times / ways you’ve seen God rejected, mocked and how you handled it? Would you handle it differently now, and why?
- V 5-7 – Who is Jesus referring to at the time?
- Is this occurring now?
A casual attitude disrespects the King of kings
What garment are we wearing?
Matt 22:9-14 ESV – “9 Go therefore to the main roads and invite to the wedding feast as many as you find.’ 10 And thoseservants went out into the roads and gathered all whom they found, both bad and good. So the wedding hall was filled with guests. 11 “But when the king came in to look at the guests, he saw there a man who had no wedding garment. 12 And he said to him, ‘Friend, how did you get in here without a wedding garment?’ And he was speechless. 13 Then the king said to the attendants, ‘Bind him hand and foot and cast him into the outer darkness. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’ 14 For many are called, but few are chosen.“
- The Kingdom of Heaven invite is for all – Salvation is for all
- We disrespect our King w/ arrogance and pride, by wearing our “old self” – it’s unacceptable
- A Christian’s walk is one of transformation – into the “image and likeness” of Christ
- “Friends” – someone who is casual – he came to the feast in attire not fitting the event
- There’s no arguing with God! He provides the sacrifice and garment – like He did in Gen 3:21
- The “chosen” accept the invitation in humility and receive PRIVILEGED ACCESS
Godly men don’t quench God’s Spirit
Wear the garment Christ gave us
Gal 3:25-29 ESV – “25 But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a guardian, 26 for in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith. 27 For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. 28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. 29 And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s offspring, heirs according to promise.”
- Holy Spirit is our “guardian” – but you must listen to Him and allow Him to lead
- A “garment change” occurred for Jacob’s house (Gen 35:1-5) & Joshua the high priest (Zech 3)
- We must put on – “clothe” ourselves in Christ
- Christians have the “mind of Christ – we must use it!
Last thoughts and considerations
- Jewish religious leaders and people’s rejection of Jesus as the Messiah brought judgement on Israel (original guests) – Jesus prophesied
- In 70 AD – Jerusalem and Second Temple destroyed, the long dispersion of the Jewish people began – a cycle of flight from conflict, slavery, and migration – Jesus prophecy fulfilled
- Godly men clothe themselves the daily in then garment and armor of Christ – no quick-change artists
- Godly men don’t want to blemish their garments with sin and compromise
- Casual Christianity and religious mindsets bind us, make us “double minded”
Additional verses for self-study
Gen 35:1-5 ESV – “1 God said to Jacob, “Arise, go up to Bethel and dwell there. Make an altar there to the God who appeared to you when you fled from your brother Esau.” 2 So Jacob said to his household and to all who were with him, “Put away the foreign gods that are among you and purify yourselves and change your garments. 3 Then let us arise and go up to Bethel, so that I may make there an altar to the God who answers me in the day of my distress and has been with me wherever I have gone.” 4 So they gave to Jacob all the foreign gods that they had, and the rings that were in their ears. Jacob hid them under the terebinth tree that was near Shechem. 5 And as they journeyed, a terror from God fell upon the cities that were around them, so that they did not pursue the sons of Jacob.”
- Jacob and all in his house had to put away all other idols
- They purified themselves and changed their garments
- God had been w/ Jacob, but now Jacob was surrendering all to God
Zech 3:4-5 ESV – “4 And the angel said to those who were standing before him, “Remove the filthy garments from him.” And to him he said, “Behold, I have taken your iniquity away from you, and I will clothe you with pure vestments.” 5 And I said, “Let them put a clean turban on his head.” So they put a clean turban on his head and clothed him with garments. And the angel of the LORD was standing by.”
- God removes our filth and clothes us in His garments
- The high priest Joshua stood in humility
- We are given privileged access to God as His heirs
Gen 3:21 ESV – “And the LORD God made for Adam and for his wife garments of skins and clothed them.”
- God provided the sacrifice and garments for Adam and Eve
John 1:10-12 ESV – “10 He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him. 11 He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him. 12 But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God…,”
Luke 14:15-24 is a similar parable – “The Parable of the Great Banquet” – told much earlier in Jesus’ ministry while dining at the home of a Pharisee
