Are you giving opportunity, room or foothold…
To the enemy
Eph 4:26-27, 30-31 ESV – “26 Be angry (orgizo) and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger (paraorgismos), 27 and give no opportunity to the devil. … 30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 31 Let all bitterness and wrath and anger (orge) and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice.”
Prov 25:28 ESV – “A man without self-control is like a city broken into and left without walls.”
Gal 5:18-20 ESV – “18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. 19 Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, 20 idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger (thymos), rivalries, dissensions, divisions…,”
- Pride and selfishness triggers ungodly anger and tries to hurt, control, destroy, intimidate, dominate and manipulate
- Wrath turns into bitterness; and bitterness into a poison
- A lack of self-control leaves us without protection
- A Christian can be sealed and still demonized – Paul wrote Ephesians to born-again believers
- We must partner with Holy Spirit – let Him into all your rooms
Understanding Godly anger
Yes, there’s Godly anger
Matt 21:12-13 ESV – “12 And Jesus entered the temple and drove out all who sold and bought in the temple, and he overturned the tables of the money-changers and the seats of those who sold pigeons. 13 He said to them, “It is written, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer,’ but you make it a den of robbers.“
Mark 3:2-5 ESV – “2 And they watched Jesus, to see whether he would heal him on the Sabbath, so that they might accuse him. 3 And he said to the man with the withered hand, “Come here.” 4 And he said to them, “Is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do harm, to save life or to kill?” But they were silent. 5 And he looked around at them with anger (orge), grieved at their hardness of heart, and said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” He stretched it out, and his hand was restored.”
Jas 1:19-21 ESV – “19 Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger; 20 for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God. 21 Therefore put away all filthiness and rampant wickedness and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.”
- Satan had no claim – “no sin” on Jesus – John 14:30
- Who is in charge of “your temple,” it’s where God’s Spirit resides?
- If there’s a thief of anger in your temple – drive it out? It’s stealing from you!
- Demons make us spiritually blind and lame; and give physical, mental / emotional infirmity too
- Why is it hard to “hear” when we manifest ungodly anger?
Discussion topics for you this week at home or with others regarding anger: 1) Do you recognize ungodly anger in your life? 2) Do you rationalize your anger outbursts? 3) What are the triggers of ungodly anger? 4) Give your wife and close friends accountability over your ungodly anger.
Last thoughts and considerations
- Don’t give devils any “topos” – “places to inhabit”
- After Jesus cleansed the temple – He healed the lame and blind
- If you have anger outbursts, rage and bitterness responses – God is revealing for healing
- God gave us a will to resist the enemy – it’s a lie that a believer can’t resist devils
- Righteous discernment pre-emptively keeps us from ungodly anger
- Dads don’t exasperate your children!
Additional verses for self-study
Psa 4:4-5 ESV – “4 Be angry, and do not sin; ponder (meditate) in your own hearts on your beds, and be silent. Selah 5 Offer right sacrifices, and put your trust in the LORD.”
- When Christians “meditate” twe’re to fill their hearts and think on God’s words, instruction – Psa 1
- Eastern meditation teaches one to empty themselves, empty their minds. – this is Satanic
- Jesus tells us an empty place is a place for the enemy – Matt 12:44
Prov 29:9, 11 ESV – “9 If a wise man has an argument with a fool, the fool only rages and laughs, and there is no quiet. … 11 A fool gives full vent to his spirit, but a wise man quietly holds it back.”
- Remember “vent” – losing your temper – this is not a fruit of the Holy Spirit. It’s a man’s spirit in an ungodly disposition of anger – not submitting to God
- Jesus tells us an empty place is a place for the enemy – Matt 12:44
Jas 3:8-9, 13-15 ESV – “8 but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. 9 With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse people who are made in the likeness of God. … 13 Who is wise and understanding among you? By his good conduct let him show his works in the meekness of wisdom. 14 But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast and be false to the truth. 15 This is not the wisdom that comes down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic.”
- Jesus tells us in Matt 12:43 “…, unclean spirits pass through dry places seeking rest and finds none”
