This part one of a two part series. Both lessons will introduce us to the origin and post flood Bible references of the Nephilim and giants
Goal – To introduce the Nephilim, and Satan’s agenda with them
- Have you heard of the term “seed war”?
- Have you heard of the Nephilim?
- Did you know they are discussed outside of Genesis 6?
Hebrew and Greek Terms / Definitions
- saw H7200 “ra’a” to see, look intently at, look after, to gaze, watch
- took #H3947 “laqah” so seize, capture, carry off, snatch, take away, to take in marriage
- Nephilim #H5303 “napil” giant, a bully or tyrant
- watcher #H5894 “ir” watchful, watcher, angel; watcher angel as a guardian – Daniel chapter 4 discusses watcher angels, and extra biblical texts of Enoch and Jubilees (in the apocrypha) give more information on watchers
- mighty men #H1368 “gibor” strong, mighty, valiant, champion, chief, tyrant, impetuous soldier or hunter. From the root word “gabar #H1396” prevail, to show oneself mighty, to act proudly towards God. Only two times “gibor” used directly to refer to giants – Gen 6:4 and 1 Sam 17:51 to describe Goliath. Other times the term is used indirectly to refer to giants – Josh 6:2; 1 Sam 9:1-2; Judges 5
- sons of God #H1121 “ben / beney” son, grandson, order, class, angels; God “Elohim” and #H430 “Elohim” strength, majesty, Supreme, One true God; “elohim” rulers, divine ones, god(s), angels, judges – see amplification of term below
- dwelling / domain #G746 “arche” the first estate, abode, beginning, origin, first place, ruler, a magistrate – denotes high rule/rank and authority over order, time, place
- angel #H4397 “mal’ak” messenger representative, messenger, angel, theophanic angel
Term – “sons of God” – the spiritual realm operates by rank and hierarchy. For instance, an arch angel is of higher rank than an angel. The term “sons of God” refers to a spirit being of higher rank than an angelic spirit. In the Hebrew Bible, the Old Testament, there are no passages in which “beney elohim” or similar occur in parallel with “mal’ak.” Later, in Jewish texts like Septuagint or Greek translations of the Old Testament beney elohim was rendered as angeloi/angellos (angels). The translation was not driven by Hebrew vocabulary. Sons of God is a phrase used to identify divine beings with higher level of responsibility or jurisdiction.[1] This term is an important distinction as we see in Job 38:4-7; Deut 32:8-9; Psa 82.
Note on extra biblical texts. These texts are used by theologian and scholars to provide commentary to Bible texts. We see this with Jewish historians such as Josephus whose writings are often used to confirm Old and New Testament scripture accounts. Furthermore, lest we forget, the Apocrypha while not authoritative was published for hundreds of years between the Old and New Testament until the early 1700’s (ie Marin Luther’s Bible) and considered sound for teaching, edifying and amplifying God’s word.
The green is the author’s notations in the verses below. Bold text added for emphasis
The seed war proclaimed
Satan’s strategy, defile the seed
Gen 3:14-15 NKJV – “14 So the LORD God said to the serpent: “Because you have done this, You [are] cursed more than all cattle, And more than every beast of the field; On your belly you shall go, And you shall eat dust All the days of your life. 15 And I will put enmity Between you and the woman, And between your seed and her Seed; He shall bruise your head, And you shall bruise His heel.””
Job 38:4-7 ESV – “4 Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? Tell me, if you have understanding. 5 Who determined its measurements–surely you know! Or who stretched the line upon it? 6 On what were its bases sunk, or who laid its cornerstone, 7 when the morning stars sang together and all the sons of God shouted for joy?”
Gen 6:1-4 ESV – “1 When man began to multiply on the face of the land and daughters were born to them, 2 the sons of God saw that the daughters of man were attractive. And they took as their wives any they chose. 3 Then the LORD said, “My Spirit shall not abide in man forever, for he is flesh: his days shall be 120 years.” 4 The Nephilim were on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of man and they bore children to them. These were the mighty men who were of old, the men of renown.”
Gen 6:7-8, 12-13 ESV – “7 So the LORD said, “I will blot out man whom I have created from the face of the land, man and animals and creeping things and birds of the heavens, for I am sorry that I have made them.” 8 But Noah found favor in the eyes of the LORD. … 12 And God saw the earth, and behold, it was corrupt, for all flesh had corrupted their way on the earth. 13 And God said to Noah, “I have determined to make an end of all flesh, for the earth is filled with violence through them. Behold, I will destroy them with the earth.”
- God’s truth is “sons of God” were present before, and at creation
- Since the sons of God were present before creation, they were spiritual and not human
- God prophesied salvation by Jesus Christ, and declared a “seed war” over Satan
- The war was / is between seed of Eve (humans/humanity) and seed of Satan
- Satan strategy – contaminate the seed of Eve/woman – defile humans to stop God’s plan
- The fallen son “sons of God” watched and lusted after the beautiful women.., and took them, violated them
- Nephilim are a “hybrid” – not redeemable – “fallen sons of God” defiled human genome
- Nephilim were a perversion of God’s creation and corrupted “everything” man and animal
- Their spirit does not come from God
Penalty for leaving their domain
The penalty was severe, and extended across the earth and all creation
2 Pet 2:4-7 ESV – “4 For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but cast them into hell and committed them to chains of gloomy darkness to be kept until the judgment; 5 if he did not spare the ancient world, but preserved Noah, a herald of righteousness, with seven others, when he brought a flood upon the world of the ungodly; 6 if by turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah to ashes he condemned them to extinction, making them an example of what is going to happen to the ungodly; 7 and if he rescued righteous Lot, greatly distressed by the sensual conduct of the wicked”
Jude 1:6-7 ESV – “6 And the angels who did not stay within their own position of authority, but left their proper dwelling (arche), he has kept in eternal chains under gloomy darkness until the judgment of the great day— 7 just as Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding cities, which likewise indulged in sexual immorality and pursued unnatural desire, serve as an example by undergoing a punishment of eternal fire.”
Num 13:32-33 ESV – “32 So they brought to the people of Israel a bad report of the land that they had spied out, saying, “The land, through which we have gone to spy it out, is a land that devours its inhabitants, and all the people that we saw in it are of great height. 33 And there we saw the Nephilim (the sons of Anak, who come from the Nephilim), and we seemed to ourselves like grasshoppers, and so we seemed to them.”
- The penalty extended past the flood
- These unclean spirits were placed in hell, in spiritual chains for violating their proper domain, dwelling, place, authority
- Satan was not one of these high-ranking spirits bound in hell, darkness by chains
- Sexual immorality carries a heavy consequence, especially when departing from proper boundaries – homosexuality, bestiality, etc
- The Nephilim spirits did not die, the bodies / creatures did
Last thoughts and considerations
- Satan tried to stop God’s plan to crush him and failed
- The spiritual battle is between US and Satan’s forces
- We are the seed of Eve created in God’s image
- Nephilim are the seed of Satan, not created in God’s image – not redeemable
- We are blessed by God’s promise in Gen 3, 12 and throughout scripture; revealed in Jesus Christ
- More next week on Nephilim “after the flood”
Additional verses for self-study
Psa 82 – gives us a look at God’s hierarchy. God did not need a “divine council” He chose to have one, just like “sons of God” and us as humans, His most special creation, made in His image and likeness
Deut 32:8-9 ESV – “8 When the Most High gave to the nations their inheritance, when he divided mankind, he fixed the borders of the peoples according to the number of the sons of God. 9 But the LORD’s portion is his people, Jacob his allotted heritage.”
- “sons of God” are given authority over territories and people – they appear to be sent to watch over as magistrates, authorities, etc.
- “fallen sons of God” would maintain their rank, but exercise it for evil – Satan’s purposes
Dan 4:13, 17, 23 ESV – 13 “ “I saw in the visions of my head as I lay in bed, and behold, a watcher, a holy one, came down from heaven. … 17 The sentence is by the decree of the watchers, the decision by the word of the holy ones, to the end that the living may know that the Most High rules the kingdom of men and gives it to whom he will and sets over it the lowliest of men.’ … 23 And because the king saw a watcher, a holy one, coming down from heaven and saying, ‘Chop down the tree and destroy it, but leave the stump of its roots in the earth, bound with a band of iron and bronze, in the tender grass of the field, and let him be wet with the dew of heaven, and let his portion be with the beasts of the field, till seven periods of time pass over him,’”
- Note “watcher” is a type of spirit with high rank and authority
1 Sam 17:51 ESV – “Then David ran and stood over the Philistine and took his sword and drew it out of its sheath and killed him and cut off his head with it. When the Philistines saw that their champion (gabor) was dead, they fled.”
- Only other time gabor is used outside Genesis 6 to directly refer to a giant
